Weird and Sometimes, Scary Weight Loss Techniques

Weight loss, fitness, and maintaining a healthy weight is more than just a fad. It is the perfect strategy for overall wellness. Simply because obesity brings with it lowered energy levels, weakened immunity, and a host of medical problems such as cardiovascular problems, diabetes, hypertension, issues with the bones and muscles, and many more.

It will surprise you to know that the U.S. Surgeon General has expressed concern that 31% of men and 35% of women are well above their ideal weight. Given these factors, if you’re looking for some effective diet and exercise plan to help you shed those extra pounds, that’s great! However, when looking for an effective diet plan, watch out for these weight loss techniques that may do you more harm than good.

Sleeping Beauty Diet

The Sleeping Beauty Diet says that you can lose weight if you sleep for days together. That’s because when you’re asleep you’re not eating and you’ll wake up a few pounds lighter. This weight loss plan is scary in more ways than one.

When you’re not moving or exercising, your muscles begin to deteriorate and lose mass. You’ll be completely starving yourself and this, in turn, leads to a slower metabolism and dehydration. You also risk damaging the organs with the use of unregulated drugs and sedatives for staying asleep. In extreme cases, the risk of death becomes very real.

Cotton Ball Diet

This weird weight loss strategy recommends that you swallow cotton balls soaked in orange juice to suppress your appetite. Not only do you deny your body of any nutrition and risk intestinal blockage, but be warned that most cotton balls are made of bleached, synthetic fibers. Would you risk your pet swallowing them?

Cigarette Diet

Considering that more than 480,000 people die from smoking each year, adopting the habit to lose weight hardly seems worth it. So, if someone advises you to light up to curb your cravings for food, think again!

Aoqili Diet Soaps

Created out of aloe vera and seaweed, aoqili diet soaps are great for giving you smooth, soft, and beautiful skin. You might find them in Asian stores, but if you’re told that they can help in your weight loss efforts by liquefying the layer of fat under your skin as you bathe, don’t believe that! Soap is good for personal hygiene, nothing more!

Blue Glasses Diet

This one was probably invented by the makers of blue-colored lens for glasses. It is based on the absurd premise that if the food you look at doesn’t look appetizing enough, you won’t eat it. So, each time you sit down for a meal, you’re expected to wear the glasses. The fact is that all the colorful foods like fruits and vegetables are actually excellent for you. By eliminating them from your weight loss program, you’ll be removing highly nutritious and low-calorie foods.

Tapeworm Diet

This one’s a really scary program for losing weight. According to the diet, you ingest the eggs of the tapeworm. Once the parasite grows in your intestines, it will eat the food you consume, so you shed the inches. Having reached your ideal weight, you can get a medical practitioner to recommend a deworming medication to pass the parasite out of your body.

Intentionally introducing a worm into your body isn’t just the downside. Keep in mind that the eggs can migrate to other parts of your body. The critters can grow up to 30 feet long and can cause infections and effects like nausea, vomiting, dementia, epilepsy, headaches, and diarrhea. The infestation can result in nutritional deficiencies and in some cases, can even have lethal consequences.

HCG Diet

The HCG diet allows you only 500 calories a day and to help you suppress hunger, you’ll be given injections of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Yes, it is approved by the FDA, but as a fertility treatment and most definitely not for weight loss. You’re likely to see results, but that’s because of the extremely small number of calories that you’re consuming each day. You also need to remember that HCG can have potential side effects like headaches, depression and anxiety, and blood clots. And, if you come across homeopathic HCG products that are available over the counter, avoid them because they’re illegal.

Chewing Diet

Created by Horace Fletcher and supposedly followed by many celebrities, the chewing diet recommends that you munch on every mouthful of food thoroughly. But, you don’t swallow it. After chewing it for a while, you should spit out the “purified” remains. Now, that’s a little bit gross! And, no! It’s not effective for weight loss.

Ear Stapling

Ear stapling is a weight loss strategy that has some connection with alternative forms of healing. It is based on the principles of reflexology of the ears. This philosophy believes that the structure of the outer ear resembles that of an upside-down fetus in the womb. Each part corresponds to your anatomy and organs. By using acupuncture on specific points on the ear, you can suppress appetite and stimulate the burning of calories.

However, you need to be very careful how you get the treatment. That’s because using unsterilized needles and working with an untrained professional carries the risk of infections of the ear. You may not gain a trimmer butt, but you’ll certainly acquire swollen ears.

Five-Bite Diet

The Five-bite diet certainly has malnourishment written all over it. As the name suggests, you’re allowed only 5 bites of any food for lunch and dinner. You get to skip breakfast, the most important meal of the day altogether. Even if you take huge mouthfuls of high-calorie foods, you’ll only consume up to 1,000 calories a day and lose weight quickly.

The downside? Poor nutrition, weakness, fatigue and lack of stamina, irritability, lowered metabolism, and of course, rapid weight gain when you start eating normally again.

Healthy Weight Loss Strategies

Losing weight and keeping fit is absolutely essential for good health and wellness. But, as important as dropping the pounds, is the strategy you use to reach your ideal weight. A good fitness program must take into account any medical conditions you have and include nutritious meals that are not only satisfying but also give you energy and stamina. You must also incorporate the optimum amount of exercise that releases feel-good hormones. All this is possible under the guidance of a professional weight loss coach who can design the perfect program that leaves you looking slim, gorgeous, and glowing with health.
